Black Friday Trekking Routes
Here are some tips and facts to consider for hiking Machu Picchu:
- Machu Picchu is typically a 4-day hike along the Inca Trail, but there are other trekking routes available like the Salkantay or the Lares trek.
- The Inca Trail is the most direct route and very popular, but it can be challenging due to its steep paths and stairs. It also requires a special permit that should be booked months in advance.
- The peak season for trekking to Machu Picchu is during the dry season from May to September. Though more crowded during this time, the weather conditions are typically better and the trails are less slippery.
- If you’re considering a Black Friday hike, it’s important to note this falls during the rainy season (November – March). The Inca Trail is less crowded during these wetter months but it’s closed for maintenance during February. During the rainy period, the surrounding rainforest is lush and the mist can create a mystical atmosphere.
- It can be physically demanding, so ensure to prepare well for the hike. Acclimatising to the altitude in Cusco for a few days before the hike can help prevent altitude sickness.
- If you decide to trek the Inca Trail, book your trip well in advance, as there is a daily limit to the number of people allowed on the trail (only 500, wich includes guides and porters).
- Consider hiring a reputable local guide. They can make your trek safer, more educational by explaining the history and significance of the site, and guide you through proper trail etiquette.
Remember, no matter when you decide to tackle this trek, respect for the natural environment and cultural heritage is important.
